Chronic Skin Problems

Chronic skin conditions typically aren’t curable, but they can be managed using drugs and by paying close attention to your lifestyle. Learn more about symptoms, treatments, and ways to feel better.

Many skin diseases are caused by impure blood or infection. If you have boils, carbuncles, blackheads, pimples, or a skin infection of any kind, a prolonged fruit diet would be very helpful. Stop using meats of all kinds and do not eat between meals. Use no cane sugar, white flour, or white flour products. Take plenty of exercise in the fresh air. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and well-cooked grains.

Cold towels are very helpful, rubbing vigorously to increase the circulation.

Make a strong tea of red clover blossoms, using three or four tablespoons of the granulated herb to a quart of water. Steep covered for one-half hour in boiling water. Drink this tea freely in place of water. Chickweed tea may be used in the same way, the taste being similar to spinach and not at all disagreeable. If you follow this treatment, using either of the herbs as directed, the skin condition will greatly improve.

The following herbs are also beneficial in skin disease: burdock root, yellow dock root, hyssop, sanicle, blue violet, golden seal, plantain, Echinacea, beech, bittersweet, buckthorn bark, elder, bloodroot, damdelion, sassafras, sarsaparilla, and spikenard. These can be taken singly or you may combine two or more of them in equal parts. Take four cups a day, one an hour before each meal and one on retiring.

The following is a very effective external remedy when made into a tea and applied a number of times a day to the affected parts: equal parts of golden seal, Echinacea, yellow dock root, burdock root, and witch hazel bark mixed thoroughly. Use a heaping tablespoon of this mixture to a pint of boiling water; steep one-half hour; pour off the liquid or strain, and add a level tablespoon of boric acid: this will help the fluid from souring.

Citrus fruits are especially beneficial in all skin troubles.
