IMPURE BLOOD: HOW TO CLEANSE

Blood in our body plays a very important role in our life. All the nutritional elements reach entire parts in our body through the medium of blood making them properly functional and keeping us at an abeyance from diseases. This essay attempts to trace down the causes of impurities in blood and possibly diagnose it as well as the panaceas for a normal and pure blood circulation in the body.

Modern life style has influenced our daily routine to a greater extent bringing in furious changes in our dietary habits and lifestyle in its wake as a result. On the other hand, the rising pollution in the environs has influenced us immensely not only from outside but from our inside within too. The bacteria spread in the environment, gases, polluted water, insomnia, junk foods, etc has tightened its vice grips over the purity of our blood. These entire poisonous elements are entering inside our body giving invitations to several diseases.

Blood purification is very important for healthy functioning of human body. Impure blood is the reason for several health and skin problems. Pimple, acne and dull skin are the major skin problems due to toxic blood. Many herbal skin purification products are available in the market to purify body. Artificial products give lot of side effects. Instead of using artificial products people should use herbal products. There are varieties of herbal products available which give no side effects. By using natural remedies for blood purification people can save their money and make their health better.

Causes of impure blood

A wrong diet, constipation, overeating, eating a combination of food at the same meal that causes fermentation, or devitalized foods. The very elements that would keep the blood pure are removed from many foods by the way they are prepared; for example, the heart and the outside of the wheat, the eyes and peelings of potatoes, the outside of rice, and the heart of corn, which is taken out of the meal. These are wonderful alkaline medicines and do a great deal toward keeping the blood pure.
Some other causes of impure blood are breathing, sleeping in rooms that are not properly ventilated, and lack of exercise. Often the muscles are poisoned and feel tired because of the accumulated waste matter from insufficient exercise.

Drinking impure water and other harmful drinks, such as tea, coffee, liquor, and all kinds of soft drinks, are other causes. These confuse the mind and cause wrong thoughts and ideas. The brain is made up of about 90 per cent water and when we drink these unwholesome drinks, many of which are stimulating, the blood is made impure and the mind is very much affected.

Worry, fear, anger, unhappiness, and hate generally hinder the circulation of food, and thus the impurities are not carried off as they should be. A stagnant condition of the skin is another cause of impure blood. Many times the blood that should be circulating near the surface of the blood is in the deeper structure, overloading the various organs and causing congestion and various diseases.

Symptoms of impure blood

The symptoms cover a large list of diseases and complains: pimples, boils, discolorations of the skin, jaundice, headaches, drowsiness, wrinkles, premature aging, insanity, nervousness, getting angry easily, continually frowning when we should be smiling, thinking evil thoughts when we should think evil of no man, seeing darkness where there is light, gray hair, loss of eyesight, loss of hearing, stiff joints, and pain in various parts of the body. All of these symptoms will be helped to a greater or lesser degree when the bloodstream is purified.

Treatment: How to cleanse impure blood

These are some natural remedies for blood purification. By detecting the causes of impurity and natural remedies the person can understand his/her health system in a good manner. Ayurveda describes several types of herbal products that have the potential to cleanse the body toxins and to promote the glow of the skin.

To make the blood pure, the first thing to do is to eliminate all harmful articles of blood and drink such as tea, coffee, all alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, all white flour products, all cane sugar products, and the liberal use of free fat or grease. The bowels must kept open by proper diet and the use of herbal laxatives when needed. Take high herbal enemas to clean out the colon and make it active and strong. Drink plenty of fresh, pure water. Take regular outdoor exercise with deep breathing and get plenty of sleep in a well-ventilated room.

Echinacea and red clover are good blood purifiers. Both can be purchased in convenient capsule form.

Keep the skin active by cold morning baths and vigorous rubbing with a coarse Turkish towel. Take a hot bath or shower every day. Wash the body thoroughly with some good soap. A thoroughly salt glow is good after a hot bath. This will stimulate the skin, make it active, and open the pores.
A massage from head to foot is beneficial. Give it thoroughly on the neck and upper part of the spine and especially on the feet.

Go on a fruit diet for one week. In the absence of an abundance of fruit, eat vegetables prepared as discussed in this site. For example, eat the green part of leafy vegetables and carrots—either raw, grated, or baked until tender - carrot juice, and potatoes.

ANTENATAL CARE

Antenatal care is the care that you receive from health-care professionals during your pregnancy. You will be offered a series of appointments with a midwife, or sometimes with a doctor (an obstetrician). They will check that you and your baby are well, give you useful information about being pregnant and what to expect as well as answering any questions you may have.

As soon as you know you are pregnant, you should get in touch with a midwife or your GP to organize your antenatal care. It’s best to see them as early as possible. Let your midwife know if you have a disability that means you have special requirements for your antenatal appointments or labor.

FEEDING YOUR BABY

It’s never too early to start thinking about how you are going to feed your baby. Breastfeeding gives your baby the best possible start in life as it has lots of benefits for both you and your baby that last a lifetime. Discuss it with your partner as their help is important. You both might like to watch the Bump to Breastfeeding DVD to see what feeding your baby might be like. If you have not received a copy of the DVD, ask your midwife for one.

THE FIRST DAYS WITH YOUR BABY

The first few days with your baby can be a very emotional time for you and your partner. There is a lot to learn and do.  There is the excitement of getting to know your baby, but you will also be tired and your body will be recovering from labor and the birth.

Keep your baby close to you as much as you can.  Your partner should also spend time holding and being close to your baby. They may feel a little left out, especially if they have to leave you and the baby in hospital and return to an empty home. They may need support and encouragement to get involved. The more you can both hold and cuddle your baby, the more confident you will all feel.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR YOUR BABY

It can be easy to get confused about what you really need for your baby. You can always ask your midwife or health visitor for advice on what to buy, and you may be given a list of essentials at your antenatal classes or by your maternity service. There are some essentials that every new mother needs, as well as extras that you might want to think about. You may be able to borrow some items, and then pass them on later to another mother or keep them for a second child.

In the first few weeks, you will be learning how to look after your baby. You will start to understand them and will learn what is normal and what may be a sign that something is wrong. But the most important thing to do in the first few weeks is to enjoy your baby. Spending time with them is the best way to help them feel safe and loved.

BABIES WHO NEED ADDITIONAL CARE

About one in eight of all babies will need extra care in hospital, sometimes on the ordinary postnatal ward and sometimes in a specialist neonatal area. Having a baby in neonatal care is naturally worrying for parents and every effort should be made to ensure that you receive the information, communication and support you need.  Not all hospitals provide neonatal services, so it may be necessary to transfer your baby to another hospital for specialist care.

GATHERING AND PRESERVING HERBS

It must be understood that both wide experience and knowledge of herbs are needed to successfully gather and preserve them. It is a study of a lifetime. Lack of knowledge in the gathering and preserving of herbs may render them of little or no medicinal value. Knowledge of the soil is also necessary. Plant grown in virgin soil will contain far greater medicinal value than those grown in different localities will show a great difference in the amount of curative properties they contain.

There is a difference between cultivated plants and those growing in their natural wild state. For instance, the dandelion growing wild has rare medicinal properties that are almost entirely lost when the plant is cultivated. Wild herbs are more effective for us in medicines than those grown in the garden.

Gather herbs only in dry weather, preferably when the plant is in full bloom or the seeds are getting ripe.

Barks

The barks should be taken when the sap is rising in the spring. Shave off the rough outer part; then peel the inner part from the trunk of the tree. To dry, put in the sun for a short time (if desired), then complete the drying in the shade. Be sure the pieces of bark are thoroughly dry. If there is any moisture left in them when they are put away, they will mold.

Roots

Dig up the roots either in the spring when the sap is rising or in the late autumn, after the sap has grown down. Slice and dry the roots in the shade, tie them up in small bundles, and put them in the attic or someplace where they are sure to keep dry.

Flowers, Seeds and Leaves

Flowers, seeds, and leaves should be gathered when they are in their prime, gathering only the perfect ones. These should also be dried in the shade. When thoroughly dry, put them in heavy brown paper bags.

Do not preserve herbs in glass, because sometimes the glass sweats. If any moisture comes in contact with the herbs they will become moldy.

When barks, roots, or other herbs are thoroughly dried and kept dry, they will retain their medicinal value for years.

Bark, roots, flowers, seeds, or leaves may all be dried for short a time in the sun, but always complete the drying process in the shade. Too much exposure to the sun tends to lessen the medicinal value. They may be dried entirely in the shade in an airy place. The only thing gained by putting them in the sun for a short time is to hasten the dryness process.

PREGNANCY

The first sign of pregnancy is stopping of the monthly menstrual periods. Occasionally the periods continue, but this is rare and it is usually not a normal period. An early symptoms is morning sickness. Some women do not suffer from this at all, but in others it is very severe and disabling. In a about six or eight weeks the breast begin to enlarge and the nipples become prominent with a dark ring around them. Movements of the child are felt between four and five months.

Regular but not strenuous exercise must be taken during the entire nine months to keep the muscles in good condition, as childbirth is chiefly a muscular action. The habit that a large majority of women have of lying or sitting most of the time, is a most injurious one both to the child and mother, as it causes the muscles to become weak and the health to generally run down. To have a beautiful baby, take plenty of gentle exercise. Brisk walking in the open air is one of the best exercise. When sleeping or resting, lie in different positions on either side, then on the stomach, then on the back.

I have seen many instances where women were obliged to do their own housework, as well as work in the garden, right up to the time of confinement and they had an almost painless delivery. Care should be taken, however, not to exercise to the point of exhaustion.

All bad habits must be abandoned and all unnecessary medication discontinued. Due to the fact that nowadays so many women smoke and drink, it cannot be overemphasized that this will have an extremely damaging effect on the child, mentally, morally, and physically. The mother should have plenty of rest, fresh air, and moderate exercise. A simple nourishing, non-stimulating diet is necessary if you would have a happy, healthy, normal child. Meat of all kinds should be eaten very sparingly, if at all.

Inflammation of the kidneys is a frequent occurrence during pregnancy, and is greatly encouraged by the use of meat. The diet should consist largely of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is an erroneous idea that the infant will be marked if the craving for some particular article of food is not satisfied.

Special attention must be given to the bowels. They should move every day. Use laxative herbs if necessary to keep them regular, but it is preferable to keep the bowels regular as far as possible with the diet. Figs, bran cereals, whole grain bread, raisins, and prunes are good for this.

Breast feeding is the best method for healthy mothers who have full-term babies. There are three main advantages: nutritional, psychological, and immunological. There is also an economical advantage, and no time is needed for the preparation of formulas. Breast feeding is clean, and contamination of any kind is infrequent. Breast feeding also offers some degree of protection against pregnancy, but it should not be relied on as a completely safe means of contraception during this time.

The nutrient content of breast milk is especially suited for infants. It produces a small curd in the infant’s stomach that can easily be digested. The total protein content is much lower than cow’s milk, so less nitrogen has to be removed by the infant’s immature kidneys and liver. The amount and type of protein in human milk are ideal for the infant’s growth and it is unlikely to cause any type of allergic reaction. The relatively large amount of cholesterol in human milk is needed for proper development of the nervous system and alum root and white oak bark. The hot water coagulates the blood and stops the flow. In the absence of these herbs, a solution may be made of alum crystals, which can be obtained in nearly every drugstore.

Diet during Pregnancy

Tea, coffee, rich and heavy foods, fish, oysters, condiments of all kinds, and all stimulating foods and drinks should be strictly avoided in the diet if a nursing mother. Very little, if any, meat should be eaten as meat contains many bacteria that cause poisons in the intestines, and the infants as well as the mother may become poisoned by it.

To avoid constipation, eat as much bulk-containing food as possible, for example: lettuce, carrots, spinach, beets, prunes, figs, apples, apricots, zwieback, shredded wheat biscuits, wheat flakes, bran cereals, ripe olives, grapes, and berries of all kinds. Fruit juices of all kinds, especially orange juice, are also excellent.

Two of the most important things when nursing a child are to keep the bowels regular and to keep calm at all times.

Foods to increase the milk

Potassium broth and mashed potatoes are both very strengthening and nutritious and will increase the milk, as will whole grain cereals, especially oatmeal and oatmeal water.

Always drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Insufficient water will always cause insufficient milk. Dill herb tea will help to increase the milk also.

Foods to decrease the flow of milk

The drinking of sage tea will dry up the milk. Do not take much liquids and eat dry foods.

During the entire nine months it is very helpful to thoroughly massage the entire area of the stomach and abdomen with cocoa butter or some good oil every evening before retiring. This will help prevent the marks on the skin that are caused by stretching of the abdomen during pregnancy, as it lubricates the skin and helps make it more elastic.

PREGNANCY GUIDE: THE BEST TIME TO GET PREGNANT

You are most likely to get pregnant if you have sex within a day or so of ovulation. This is usually about 14 days after the first day of your last period. An egg lives for about 12-24 hours after it is released. For you to get pregnant, the egg must be fertilized by a sperm within this time. Sperm can live for up to seven days inside a woman’s body. So if you have had sex in the seven days before ovulation, the sperm will have had time to travel up the fallopian tubes to ‘wait’ for the egg to be released.

To determine the time when you're most likely to be fertile, try our ovulation calculator.

Common questions about conceiving

How long it takes to conceive

The majority of couples get pregnant within three months. Your own time line could be longer if you're older, have certain fertility-unfriendly habits (like smoking), or have a condition that impairs fertility.

Of all couples trying to conceive:
  • 30 percent get pregnant within the first cycle (about one month)
  • 59 percent get pregnant within three cycles (about three months)
  • 80 percent get pregnant within six cycles (about six months)
  • 85 percent get pregnant within 12 cycles (about one year)
  • 91 percent get pregnant within 36 cycles (about three years)
  • 93 to 95 percent get pregnant within 48 cycles (about four years)

If you try for a year without success, it's smart to seek help from a fertility specialist. You might conceive on your own if you keep trying, but in case you have an underlying fertility problem, it's best to get help so you don't waste valuable years as your biological clock continues to tick.

If you're 35 or older, time is even more precious and you should get help sooner: Set up an appointment with a specialist if you're not pregnant within six months.

How do I know when I'm ovulating?

Some women can tell when they ovulate. But most women don't notice any changes at all. If you're thinking about getting pregnant, try to track your cycle for a couple of months. Some signs of ovulation include:
  • Increased vaginal discharge that takes on a wetter, egg-white-type quality
  • A slight increase (about 0.4 to 1 degree Fahrenheit) in basal body temperature, or BBT, which you can detect by taking your temperature each morning before you get out of bed, one or two days after you ovulate. You can get a good sense of your cycle if you chart your BBT for a few months.
For information on how to track these signs, see our articles on detecting ovulation and basal body temperature and cervical mucus. The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health, by Toni Weschler, can also teach you to read your body's signals.

If you still have trouble pinpointing the exact date of ovulation, you might consider trying an ovulation predictor test.

If my periods are irregular, will it be harder for me to get pregnant?

Most women have about 12 periods a year, but some have fewer and some skip months or don't get a period at all. Stress, heavy exercise, dramatic weight loss or gain — all of these can cause interruptions in your period. The more irregular your period is, the more difficult it is to predict ovulation.

Say your cycle is 28 days one month, 21 days the next month, and 32 days the following month. Keep a record of your menstrual cycles for several months. Then subtract 17 from your shortest cycle and 11 from your longest cycle. The days in between the two are the ones you're most likely to be fertile.

If your cycles are irregular and more than 35 days apart or longer, you should consider seeing your ob-gyn or a fertility specialist to check for other causes of an irregular cycle, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), ovarian dysfunction, thyroid disorder, excessive weight loss or an elevated prolactin level.

Can't we just try and see what happens?

Of course, you don't have to plot basal body temperature or keep complicated logs if you don't want to. You don't even need to have an orgasm to get pregnant. Try having sex at least two to three times a week consistently, and the law of averages probably will prevail.

INFANT FEEDING

INFANT FEEDING

The natural food for infants is mother’s milk, which is by far the best. Mother’s milk is richer in iron than cow’s milk. If the mother is on a good diet, eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including daily citrus fruit, the baby will receive all the necessary vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, and carbohydrate. Unless the mother is in a weakened condition or is suffering from disease, she should nurse her child, and nine times out of ten would be able to do so by using the right diet.

Breastfeeding is the Best Tips for Making Breastfeeding Work
Regularity in infant feeding is essential. The child should not stay at the breast more than thirty minutes, and if the milk supply is plentiful ten to fifteen minutes is usually adequate. All infants should be weaned by the end of the first year. Weaning should be gradual. Give a bottle once a day with the breast feeding, increasing the number of bottles each day until the child is entirely weaned.
The recommended dietary patterns for infants and toddlers
Cane sugar in any form should never be given to infants under any circumstances. Many times cane sugar is the cause of fever and other ailments. Malt sugar, malt honey, or honey should always be used in place of cane sugar.

Diarrhea in infants can be stopped by the use of thin rice or barley water. For an older child, use oatmeal gruel. This should be given until the looseness is checked.

Soybean milk is a good food for infants and children and can be given from the first day. In using soybean milk, you eliminate the danger of contaminated milk and also disease is not encountered. The flavor of soybean milk can be improved by addition of a little powdered oatmeal, powdered wheat malt, or barley malt.

Health Benefits of Soy Milk
For infants, soybean milk should be diluted by using one-fourth water to three-fourths soybean milk. Discretion must be used in diluting soybean milk as in other infant’s food, depending upon the needs of the infants. When the infant has a weak stomach, or is not strong constitutionally, dilute the milk more. The milk can be given full strength at the age of five or six months. When the baby is six months old, dilute four tablespoonful of whole wheat flakes in boiling water until completely dissolved, put through a fine sieve, and add to the baby’s bottle. This will give added nourishment in an excellent form. A smaller amount of wheat flakes may be added earlier with benefit.

Begin feeding wholesome simple foods in puree form, such as greens, vegetables, fruit juices, and gruels, when the first teeth appear. Orange juice and tomato juice may be given from the beginning, starting with a half teaspoonful at about the age of one month.

When a child is given meat, white flour products, cane sugar products, candies, etc., he loses his taste and desire for wholesome natural foods. The eating of these detrimental things by children is responsible for many illnesses.

Never allow children to eat between meals. Irregularities in eating ruin the digestive organs by keeping them over-worked, causing indigestion and nervousness.

If the baby is being fed cow’s milk, vitamin C and D may be lacking. A simple way to make sure the infant is getting sufficient vitamins is to use a multivitamin concentrate which contains vitamins A, C, D, and sometimes B complex. But over dosage with vitamins, particularly vitamin D, should be avoided. From solid food to sippy cups, spoons, and kids' ability to feed themselves, here are the major eating milestones and when to expect them. USEFUL HINTS TO PRESERVE IMPORTANT VITAMINS IN FOOD

Many important nutrients are lost to a greater or lesser degree when food is cooked by ordinary methods. In particular, the water-soluble vitamins - B-complex and C - may be largely lost by careless cooking and storage. Vitamins C is the most unstable of all the vitamins and if, by observing the following rules for cooking, this vitamin can be largely retained, other important nutrients, including iron, will also be preserved in significant amounts. Fortunately, some of our food sources that are highest in vitamins C, the citrus fruits, are best eaten raw. Fruits and vegetables together supply well over 90 per cent of our vitamins C.

Follow the practical suggestions listed below in order to retain the most nutrients while cooking your food, and remember the four nutrients robbers are air, water, heat, and light.

USEFUL HINTS TO PRESERVE VITAMINS

  • Use a little water as possible during cooking.
  • Have the water boiling for about one minute before adding the food.
  • Let the water simmer rather than boiling vigorously.
  • Save the leftover water to use as vegetable stock for gravy or soup.
  • Cut the vegetable in large, uniform pieces just before cooking. Leave the peeling or skin on when possible. The smaller the pieces being cooked, the larger the area exposed to water, and therefore the greater the vitamin loss will be.
  • Use the shortest cooking time possible. Serve vegetables tender and crisp, not soggy and mushy.
  • Serve food immediately after preparation. Do not keep it hot for a long time before serving. Plan your meals so that reheating of food is done as seldom as possible. Cover and refrigerate leftover foods right away.
  • Keep cooking vessels tightly covered.
  • Cooking by steaming or pressure cooker will serve about 30 per cent more of the vitamins than boiling.
  • Do not add soda to cooking water, because this destroys vitamin C and some of the B-complex vitamins.
  • Food that is high in vitamins C should not be cooked in copper or iron vessels.
  • Store fresh fruits and vegetables in a refrigerator and prepare them immediately before they are to be used. Do not let them stand in water or remain exposed to air any longer than is necessary.
  • Place frozen food directly into boiling water after removing from the freezer. Do not permit the food to thaw first.
  • Keep orange juice covered and in the refrigerator. Drink fresh orange juice immediately after squeezing. Do not leave it exposed to the air.

HEALTHY WAYS TO COOK VEGETABLES

The best way to cook vegetables is to bake them. Boiling is good if every water is used and none of the liquid is thrown away. Waterless cooking, casserole baking, and low pressure steam cooking are also good.

When boiling vegetables, put them in just enough boiling water to cook them and don’t overcook them. If there is any water left, save it to add to your soups or broths. The vegetable must boil or simmer continuously after placing them in the water; otherwise they will become water-soaked.

Add sea salt sparingly just before the vegetable are entirely done; if salt is added as they are beginning to cook, it has tendency to toughen them. Cook vegetables only until they are tender; prolonged cooking destroys the life-giving properties. Do not add fat to the vegetables while they are cooking; add your seasoning just before they are done, and serve them at once.

Never peel or remove the eyes of Irish potatoes before cooking; the life of the potato is in the eyes and the peel. Do not peel any vegetable that can be used without peeling. Carrots, parsnips, salsify (vegetable oyster or oyster plant), rutabagas, and others may be scraped lightly, so as not to lose the minerals that are found just under their skins.

Green vegetables are very desirable during the winter months; if you think them expensive remember that they are far cheaper than the cost of an illness, and when properly prepared they are real medicine.

Canned or frozen vegetables, even if you get a good brand, are not as good as properly prepared fresh vegetables. But they are better than fresh vegetables that are poorly prepared.

To obtain protein with your vegetables, serve one of the many new meat analogs now on the market, or any nuts you like best. Nuts require thorough mastication, however, and they should be chewed to a creamy consistency in order to get the most good out of them. The meat substitutes that contains nuts are better for most people, because the nuts used in them have been ground.

Vegetables can be seasoned with soy mayonnaise that has been made without the lemon if desired. Either dilute the mayonnaise with cold water to the consistency of cream, or use it as is. Either rich soybean milk or one of the nut milks is good when added to hot vegetables; heat the vegetables for only a few minutes after the milk has been added, and serve at once. Good soybean milk can now be purchased; thus you can always have it on hand.

All the non-starchy vegetables, such as carrots, cabbage, cucumber, radishes, and parsley, should be eaten raw if they agree with you.

A guide for the individual road safety commitment

Road crashes can happen to you and to the ones you love. There are solutions to bring to this global crisis, and everyone can play a role.

The purpose of this Blog post is to show how your own individual contribution can make a difference. It has been written by the road safety specialists of the Global Road Safety Partnership
We are all involved in some way in road transport. Everybody is at risk from the energy involved - and it could be you next.

Many road safety initiatives are being implemented in the areas of engineering, law enforcement, school education, public information, responding to emergency situations and building up trauma care systems.

A way to minimize the risk can start with you taking responsibility for protecting yourself and others. By following the ten commitments in this post, your chance of survival throughout your life will increase significantly.

10 Personal Road Safety Commitment

CommitmentWhy?
I commit to use a seatbelt"A seatbelt reduces the risk of getting killed in case of a crash by half."• Your own body energy in a moving car is usually enough to kill yourself and everyone else in the car. At 70 km/h your car has about the same energy as 40 flying rifle bullets, and your own body about 4 rifle bullets. If you do not use a belt, your body becomes a weapon! • A seatbelt is one of the most effective road safety measures. • A seatbelt prevents you from being thrown into the windshield. • Passengers with no seatbelt count for most occupant fatalities. • In a road crash, seat belts have been proven to reduce the risk of death by half for front seat - by 25 per cent for rear seat passengers. • A seat belt reduces head injuries by 60 per cent to vehicle occupants. • In a crash without a seatbelt where you are thrown out of the car, you have a 75 per cent chance of being killed.
I commit to wear a helmet on a motorcycle"A helmet can increase the chance of my survival in a collision by 40 per cent"• Your own body energy while riding a motorcycle is enough to split your head open in a crash. • Helmet wearing for both rider and passenger will increase the chance of survival by up to 40 per cent depending on the speed of the motorcycle, and quality of the helmet. • Tens of thousands of people around the world die in motorcycle collisions every year. • Head and neck injuries are the most common causes of death and severe injury among motorcyclists and cyclists. • Helmets are effective in reducing the likelihood of head injuries, as well as their severity. • For optimal protection the helmet needs to be fitted properly. • Wearing a crash helmet by motorcyclists reduces the risk of brain damage by 70 per cent.
I commit to drive at a safe speed and distance suitable for the conditions"I don't have time to stop if a pedestrian crosses the road in front of me."• Your vehicle has more than enough energy to kill other people. • The energy of your vehicle is related to the square of the speed, and even at very low speeds is enough to kill a human being. • The faster you drive the harder you hit. A family car at 50 km/h has about the same energy as 20 flying rifle bullets, at 70 km/h it is 40 bullets. • The higher speed - and therefore energy - the more severe the crash. • A driver is more likely to lose control at higher speeds • At high speeds one fails evaluate oncoming risks in good time, and it takes longer to react and longer to stop. • Most road users are killed if hit by a car travelling 50 km/h. • At 30 kph the chance of survival is more than 90 percent - which still means that one in ten pedestrians are killed even at this speed • Speed is estimated to be the main contributory factor in about half of all road crashes.
I commit to not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs"Driving under the influence affects my performance and I can harm myself or other people severely."• Because I am in charge of a machine with the energy to kill myself and others. I would not want to be in an air jet with a pilot who drinks on duty. Why would I do it myself? • Drivers who have been drinking have a much higher risk of involvement in crashes than those with no alcohol in their blood. • Alcohol affects your brain and driving skills: - Poor judgment of the situation and the risks. - Lower concentration. - Poor assessment of distances. - Reduced field of vision. - Reduced co-ordination and reflexes. - Longer reaction times. • At a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .05 (limit in many countries), the risk of being involved in a road crash is about double compared with a BAC of zero and the risk increases rapidly with increasing alcohol. • The only safe option is not to drink alcohol if you plan to drive, and never offer an alcoholic drink to someone else who is intending to drive. • Drugs also create a false sense of alertness and confidence reducing the ability to make correct decisions. Drugs seriously affect driving.
NOTE:
Cold showers, exercise, black coffee, fresh air, or vomiting does not help reduce the alcohol in your blood.
Only time reduces the level of alcohol - but even the following morning the alcohol level can be too high for safe driving.
Becoming tired when driving can be as dangerous as being affected by alcohol or drugs.
I commit to not use a mobile phone when driving"It only takes one second of distraction to create a dangerous situation and someone can die."• Using a hand-held or hands-free mobile phone while driving may increase your chance of a crash by as much as four times. • Riskier decision making. Talking on the phone is not the same as talking to a passenger. The person on the other end cannot see your environment and will be trying hard to get your attention at exactly the time you need it to drive. • Talking on the phone leads to less controlled braking and moving out of the lane. • Talking takes away your concentration on the road which affects attention and judgement. The more you talk the less you see. • Slower reactions. Reaction times for drivers using a phone are 30 per cent worse than those who do not. • All phone calls distract from driving. The more distraction while driving the more dangerous.
NOTE:
Callers also play an important role. If you ring someone on their mobile phone who turns out to be driving when they answer, say you'll call them later and hang up
I commit to be visible as a pedestrian or cyclist"I want to be seen by the drivers so I don't get hit!"• Pedestrians and cyclists are extremely vulnerable. Nearly every vehicle around them has enough energy to kill them. • Bright or reflective clothing helps to be seen on the road at night. If drivers can see you, they can more easily avoid you. • Pedestrians and cyclists are small and will not be easily seen by drivers. • Pedestrians and cyclists should not expect that the traffic can stop quickly.
NOTE:
Behaving in a safe manner on a road increases safety:
Use safe crossings and footpaths.
Always wait for the green light to cross a road.
Do not run across roads à Use the side of the road with street lights.
Do not cross the road from between parked cars as drivers may not see you.
Try not to cross near trees or bushes because drivers may not see you.
Avoid crossing near a bend or crest in the road. Give yourself a good chance to see vehicles coming from both directions.
Avoid crossing roads near roundabouts, unless a pedestrian crossing is provided. If there is no pedestrian crossing, pedestrians must give way to vehicles.
When it is dark, cross the road near street lights.
Children and young people must learn the rules and know how to behave in traffic.
I commit to know and respect the highway code"Highway code is there to protect myself and others in what is a dangerous activity."• The highway code and traffic law is there to protect individuals and society. • The purpose of the highway code is to provide factual information and guidance to road users. • Compliance will reduce the frequency and severity of road crashes. • If the public understands it is for their own interest, it is easier to follow the rules. NOTE:
Even when they are not enforced - follow the traffic rules.
I commit to maintain my vehicle in a good condition"The safer the vehicle the safer is everyone around me and myself too!"• It is important to keep the vehicle fit for driving and safety. • Road vehicle standards are set to ensure that vehicles meet acceptable safety and environmental standards. • Undergo regular vehicle testing and inspection at an authorized garage. • Avoid overloading in volume and weight. • A spare tire and emergency equipment including first aid kit and a set of safety triangles can save time and lives.
NOTE:
Before driving your vehicle, check its condition, including: Brakes, steering, horn, lights, battery and windscreen wipers.
Clean lights.
Tires pressure and wear.
Check oil, water and other liquids if necessary
I commit to be licensed and trained for the vehicle I drive"I am driving a vehicle with the energy to kill, and I must be responsible with it."• Good and safe driving takes good driver training. • In order to drive, a license is needed that shows you are competent to do it. • Driving different vehicles takes different driving skills and licenses. NOTE:
Driver standards apply to both private drivers and commercial operators.
Normally these requirements are met by undertaking a practical and a theoretical test.
Your driving license needs to be valid.
International driver licenses can be obtained for traveling abroad.
I commit to know how to react in case of a crash*"Imagine a victim with severe bleeding following a road accident. If nobody applies pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding, even the most sophisticated or the quickest emergency service in the world will only arrive on the scene to certify death"• Anyone can save a life! The application of first aid and alerting emergency services can mean the difference between life and death in a road crash. • 57 per cent of deaths from traffic collisions occur in the first few minutes of a crash. • On average, it takes less than four minutes for a blocked airway to be fatal. • The number of people who die as a result of road crash would be considerably reduced if a witness was able to act effectively before the arrival of the emergency services. • When all drivers and more people learn what to do to help road crash victims, more lives will be saved. • Mobilizing the emergency services can make the difference between life and death for people trapped in vehicles or needing emergency surgery.

Assist in spreading the message!

Spreading the road safety messages and the commitments in your own environment helps save lives. By increasing awareness and skills more people will survive and your local community will be safer.

How and where you can contribute to spreading the road safety message:

  • Set a good example yourself.
  • Discuss with family and friends.
  • Introduce the commitments - into your own life - in the work environment - in your local community - around schools (safe crossings) and in class - sports clubs - local markets and shopping areas.

Following these commitments, doing volunteer work and assisting to ensure better road safety in your organization and in your local community will save lives!

How Can I help My Baby with Colic?

What is Colic?

Colic is not a disease. A baby with colic cries a lot more than other babies. Nothing seems to comfort the baby or stop the crying. It is painful for the baby and very hard for parents. If your baby has colic, do not blame yourself. It is not your fault.

No one knows what causes colic or why only some babies get it. Colic is most likely to occur in the evenings. It starts during the first few weeks of life and, in most cases, ends when the baby is 3 or 4 months old.

Check with your doctor or public health nurse to make sure there is not some other reason for the crying.

If your baby has colic, get as much rest and help as you can. Let other people help with the baby, meals, and other children. Remind yourself that this will not last forever.

A baby with colic:

• Cries as if in pain after a feeding • Pulls his knees up to his chest as with a bad stomach ache • May pass gas or vomit • Does not stop crying for long, no matter what you do.

You may find these ideas helpful if your baby has colic:

  • If you are using a commercial formula, check to be sure the nipple is full of milk so your baby does not swallow too much air during feedings.
  • Burp before, during, and after each feeding.
  • Try to stay calm and keep your baby calm. Play soft, soothing music. Hum or sing. Walk or rock your baby. Rub the baby’s back for comfort and to help pass gas. Lay your baby on his tummy and rub his back. Or, lay your baby on his back and rub his tummy. Place a warm cloth on the tummy or bath the baby in the tub.
  • Use an infant carrier that straps on your shoulders (SnugliTM). It allows you to carry and comfort your baby when you have to do other things.
  • Take the baby for a car ride or go for a walk using the carriage. Sometimes the noise and movement help.
  • If you smoke, the nicotine goes into the baby with your breast milk. This may be making the baby upset. You may want to stop or reduce your smoking. Or you could only smoke after you feed the baby.
  • Do not change your baby’s commercial formula without first talking to a health professional.

Pneumonia and pleurisy: Natural Treatments

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung, usually caused by an infection. Three common causes are bacteria, viruses and fungi. You can also get pneumonia by accidentally inhaling a liquid or chemical. People most at risk are older than 65 or younger than 2 years of age, or already have health problems.

If you have pneumonia, you may have difficulty breathing and have a cough and a fever. A physical exam and history can help determine if you have pneumonia. Chest X-rays and blood tests can help determine what is wrong.

Treatment depends on what made you sick. If bacteria are the cause, antibiotics should help. Viral pneumonia may get better with rest and drinking liquids.

Preventing pneumonia is always better than treating it. The best preventative measures include washing your hands frequently, not smoking, and wearing a mask when cleaning dusty or moldy areas. There is a vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia, a bacterial infection that accounts for up to a quarter of all pneumonia.

Pleurisy is a condition in which there is inflammation in the pleura membrane of the chest cavity and lungs. The patient feels pain, especially while inhaling and exhaling. The pain becomes worse during coughing and sneezing. Pain can also be there while moving. Some patients have pain in chest and shoulders. The pain decreases while holding the breath and putting pressure on the area that pains. There can be fever, chills and shortness of breath.

The patient can have loss of appetite and dry cough. Due to inflammation, there is rubbing of chest pleura membranes against one another similar to the rubbing of sandpapers. This causes the pain while taking deep breaths in and out. Pleurisy can be due to viral infection, pneumonia, tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism and other infectious diseases.

Chest trauma, rib fractures and heart surgery can cause pleurisy. Lung cancer is a rare cause of pleurisy. Pleurisy can become worse due to smoking. You must try home remedies for the treatment of pleurisy. Some of the best home remedies for pleurisy are as follows

Natural treatments for pneumonia

Certain home remedies have been found beneficial in the treatment of pneumonia. During the early acute stage of this disease, a herbal tea made from fenugreek seeds will help the body to produce perspiration, dispel toxicity and shorten the period of fever. In can be taken up to four cups daily. The quantity should be reduced as condition improves. To improve flavor, a few drops of lemon juice can be used. During this treatment, no other food or nourishment should be taken as fasting and fenugreek will allow the body to correct these respiratory problems in a few days.

Garlic is a the ultimate remedy for pneumonia, if given in sufficient quantities. Garlic will bring down the temperature as well as the pulse and respiration within 48 hours. Garlic juice can also be applied externally to the chest with beneficial results as it is an irritant and rubefacient.

Sesame seeds are valuable in pneumonia . An infusion of the seeds, mixed with a tablespoon of flaxseeds, pinch of unrefined sea salt and a desert spoon of pure honey, should be given in the treatment of this infection. This will help remove catarrhal matter and phlegm from the bronchial-tubes.

Chilli peppers, hot mustard, radishes, pepper, onions and garlic contain substances called ‘mucolytics’ (similar to over-the-counter expectorant cough syrups) that liquefy thick mucus that accumulates in the sinuses and breathing passages.

The pain of pneumonia can be relieved by rubbing oil of turpentine over the rib cage and wrapping warmed cotton wool over it.

When suffering a fever, the patient should avoid any supplements containing iron or zinc, iron causes great tension in a body that is fighting infection and zinc is not absorbed by the body during fever.

Pumpkin: Fry the leaf stalk of the pumpkin in olive oil and apply it over the chest.

Galanga: Separately powder equal quantities of either the rhizome or rootstock of galangal and sugar crystals and mix the powders together. Administer 1 teaspoon of the resulting mixture with hot water or milk.

Okra (Lady’s Finger): Make a decoction of the leaves or use the leaves as a hot poultice. Make a tea of the flowers and fruit by decoction and add a little honey.

Indian Acalypha: Make a decoction of the leaves.

Natural treatments for pleurisy

Heat Application

Heat application can help in curing the symptoms of pleurisy. You can take bath with hot water. You can add olbas oil to the bath water. You must apply hot chest packs for one hour daily three times. When you are using the hot packs, you should do deep breathing. You can also apply heat on the affected area with the help of hot towel. If you have fever, you should apply cold packs. Do not use ice packs if you do not have fever as it can worsen the condition.

Basil Leaves

Holy basil leaves are a good remedy for pleurisy. You must eat twenty grams of these leaves before taking breakfast. You can also eat basil at the evening time. Basil leaves help in making the pleura fluid dry, which provides relief to the patient.

Use Humidifier

You should use a humidifier as it can make the air moist due to which the sputum becomes thin. If the sputum is thin, it is easy to expel it from the lungs. Use the humidifier at night while sleeping. You should clean the humidifier every day so that bacteria and fungus do not get collected inside it. If there is deposition of bacteria and fungus inside the humidifier, it can worsen the problem of inflammation.

Black Seed Oil and Celery

Black seed is a spice used for cooking food. Black seed oil can help in curing pleurisy. You can take the oil in the form of capsules. The oil makes the immune system strong. You can also use seeds and oil of celery for curing pleurisy.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olive leaves contain an ingredient called oleuropein, which helps in fighting all types of infections and reducing blood pressure. It cures internal infections and fight cancer. The olive leaf extract helps in healing pleurisy. You can take olive leaf extract in the form of capsule or powder. You can also take the olive leaf in the form of liquid or dry leaf tea. Olive leaves contain antioxidants, polyphenols and flavonoids.

Rest, Fresh Air and Sunbath

You should take rest and lie on the body side that pains. You should take abundant fresh air. You can take air bath as well as sunbath. Seashore air baths in the morning time are very helpful. Bathing in salt lakes can help in reducing pleurisy symptoms.

Cough Syrup, Natural Tea and Chest Strapping

Take codeine cough syrup for treating cough. Pleurisy root tea is a very good remedy for pleurisy. The tea will help in expelling mucus and it clears the chest and lungs. If the pleurisy is dry, you can strap the chest. You should not use hot packs when you strap the chest. You should avoid heavy lifting. Do not do heavy exercises.

Linseed Poultice

You can apply linseed poultice on the chest and back. The poultice should be loose. Warm massage can help in reducing pleurisy symptoms. When you gain some strength, you can do moderate exercise that does not cause fatigue.
