Reasons for a Weird Lump Above the Belly Button in Pregnancy

Pregnancy comes with a lot of changes, especially to the size and shape of your body - anywhere from your head to your feet! Some changes in pregnancy can be very normal, but others can sometimes indicate that there is an issue.

If you’re experiencing any lumps above your belly button, it’s always best to get checked by a healthcare professional. Although there are many harmless reasons for lumps, sometimes they can be a sign of an underlying issue.

Some examples of the common reasons for these bumps include:
  • The fundus (top) of your uterus
  • Your baby’s elbow or knee
  • Swollen lymph node
  • Diastasis (abdominal muscle separation, common in pregnancy)
  • Benign fatty tumor
  • Umbilical Hernia
  • Blood clot
If the lump doesn’t go away within 24 hours, see your healthcare professional. Until then, avoid straining the area or pushing on it. Depending on the diagnosis, the lump may need immediate attention, be left to resolve on its own, or need medical attention after you give birth.
