'healthy' foods you might not realize contain a lot of sugar


Fizzy drinks, fast food, and confectionery aren't the only items packed full of hidden sugars

The message is constant and loud - sugar is bad news for us.

So much so, we can expect a sugar tax on items such as soft drinks and also on sugary food in hospitals.

We know the likes of fizzy drinks and confectionery are loaded with the bad sort of sugar.

However, as Refinery29 reports, surprisingly there are other 'healthy' foods which contain saccharine nasties.

Sugar-free diets are not exactly easy to enforce, as these findings and these items below prove.


Wholemeal bread


Perhaps the most unexpected food on the list, a 40g portion of wholemeal bread comes with half a teaspoon of sugar, and some bread contains a whole teaspoon.

Apples


Fruit is notoriously full of sugar, and with 10g per item, apples should not be eaten excessively.

Raisins


These are between 67 to 72 percent sugars such as fructose and glucose.

A small box (1.5 oz) of Sun-Maid raisins has 129 calories, 0g fat, 34g carbs, a 1g protein which is the carbohydrate equivalent of around eight and a half teaspoons of sugar.

Bran flakes


Another surprising item, Bran Flakes are 22 percent sugar, and any accompanying milk just adds to this.

Heinz tomato soup


We know tomato ketchup is riddled with sugar, but soup - often touted as a healthy meal - also has up to four tablespoons of hidden sugars.

Not as healthy as you think

Granola


Most granolas are classified as high sugar, with more than 12.5g of sugar per 100g. Health guidelines recommend consuming no more than 90g of sugar in a day.
